Raccoons are an animal that have adapted extremely well to the changing environment that comes with the presence of humans. The fact that they are omnivores with a diet not very different from humans means they can easily live off of the trash humans leave behind. Their preference for burrows to hide in means that they can make a home out of the stormwater systems that litter urban environments. In this changing landscape, they are a creature that has come out the victor. In some ways, that is a good thing. It is nice to see a piece of nature that is more resilient to being beaten back by humans. However, they are an invasive species problem in parts of Europe and Asia. In part, this is due to their easy adaptation to urban environments.
