Painted Turtle

The Painted Turtle is widespread throughout North America. It can be found in Southern Canada and Northern Mexico. Most of its range is in the United States where it can be found in almost all of the Lower 48 states (California, Nevada, and Florida seem to be the only exceptions). It is not very large and is also not picky with what kind of water it inhabits. They can sometimes be found in small stormwater ponds that might surprise you to find any life in at all. They will spend most of their life in the water, but can be most easily seen on sunny days when they find a nice rock or log near the water to sun themselves on. If you get too close and spook them, they will dive straight into the water to escape you.
