The Common Snapping Turtle is the largest inland turtle in the Northern US. To the south, the Alligator Snapping Turtle is larger and lives along the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi River basin. Along the coasts, sea turtles can sometimes be found which are much larger than either snapping turtle. Sometimes just nicknamed “Snappers”, these turtles are a common sight in almost any body of water from small ponds to large rivers. They pose a minor danger to humans with their strong jaws, but are also considered a delicacy by many people who live near them.
