American Holly

The American Holly is a small tree that grows in the Southeastern part of the United States. It is usually present as an understory tree, but under the right circumstances can get as tall as 60 feet and fill the canopy role. It is a common choice for ornamental planting. As an evergreen, it keeps its leaves all year long which can add some much needed color to an otherwise dreary landscape. It also produces bright red fruit in the late fall that last into the middle of winter. This fruit is toxic for humans and many other mammals, but are a critical food source for some birds. So, the American Holly is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to support local wildlife with their decorative landscaping.
