The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America. It is also exceptionally common and can easily be found throughout the United States and Canada. It is a frequent backyard bird and can easily be attracted by suet feeders. It is very similar in appearance to the Hairy Woodpecker, but can be distinguished by its smaller size. The Downy Woodpecker also has a bill that is much shorter than its head while the Hairy Woodpecker has a bill about the same length as the rest of its head.
