The Black Rat Snake is a large snake common throughout the Eastern United States. It is non-venomous and poses no threat to humans. When threatened, it prefers to run instead of biting and it is fast enough that it usually can escape from humans with no struggle. The one in this photo was asleep in a spot that it was going to get run over so I picked it up to move it. They were not happy about it but even at their angriest did not bite me.
