The Yellow Fever Mosquito (aka Aedes aegypti) is, as the name might suggest, most famous for being the mosquito that transmits Yellow Fever. It is also the mosquito that transmits the Zika virus. Native to tropical climates, the winters of the temperate regions of North America get too cold for it to survive. However, there is evidence that they have successfully found warm pockets of the DC metro system that allow them to survive the winter. This allows them to have a yearly population in the DC area. On the other side of the river in Virginia, there is not yet evidence of them surviving the winter but every year some make their way over from DC and a few have been observed breeding.
